- A sidewall cut, split or puncture. Not repairable, at any size. The sidewall flexes with every rotation, so nothing bonded to it stays bonded.
- Damage in the shoulder, the outer edge where the tread meets the sidewall. Outside the tread area, so outside the repairable zone.
- A bulge or a bubble in the sidewall. That is the casing failing internally, not a puncture. There is nothing to seal.
- A blowout, a gash, or a hole you can get a finger into. Past the quarter inch limit, and usually past the tread area too.
- A tire that has been driven on flat or badly underinflated. The casing can be wrecked internally with almost nothing to see from outside. Drivers get this one wrong most often, because the tire still looks fine.
If the tire is in that list, sealant and a plug kit are not slower options. They are wrong options. Do not reinflate it and drive on it. Putting air back into a tire whose structure has already failed does not restore the structure. It hides the symptom until the next load or the next corner. Call for recovery and let the tire come off the rim where someone can look inside it.
This is also why "it took the plug and it is holding air" proves less than it feels like it proves. Holding air and being structurally sound are two different tests, and the second one can only be run with the tire off the wheel.
A Plug Is a Temporary Repair, Even When It Works
Here is the line almost no roadside kit review states plainly. The USTMA's position on the plug you just installed is that "a plug alone is an unacceptable repair." The repair it recognizes has two parts: "A rubber stem, or plug, must be applied to fill the puncture injury and a patch must be applied to seal the inner liner."
That is a combination patch-plug unit fitted from inside the tire by a shop, which means the tire has to come off the rim. No roadside kit can do it, and no external plug does the second half of the job, because the inner liner is the air seal and you cannot reach it from outside.
So the honest sequence for a plug kit is: plug it if the damage qualifies and the spot is safe, drive to a tire shop, and have the tire demounted, inspected and properly repaired or replaced. Tell them a plug is in it. A plug that has been in a tire for eight months is not a repair that worked. It is a repair nobody finished.
What Sealant Costs You After the Roadside
Sealant is the fastest of the three and the one with the longest tail of consequences. Three of them are worth knowing before the can is in your trunk rather than after.
It complicates the shop's job, and shops know it. Sealant coats the inside of the tire, which is exactly the surface a proper patch-plug repair has to bond to. Some shops clean it out and repair the tire, some decline to work on a sealant filled tire at all, and some tire and vehicle manufacturers place their own restrictions on repairing a tire that has had sealant in it. It can foul a tire pressure sensor. The sealant maker MULTI SEAL states the compatibility line clearly on its own site: vehicles with internal sensors, which is what passenger cars use, are not going to be compatible with a sealant or additive, while the sealed and external sensors used in trucking, trailer and RV applications generally are. Sealant makers do not all agree here. You have to declare it. Nobody can see sealant through a tire. A technician who breaks the bead on a tire full of unannounced sealant gets it on their equipment and on themselves, and you have removed their ability to make an informed decision about repairing the tire. Say it out loud at the counter.
Inflator Only: The Case Where Nothing Else Is Needed
The most common roadside tire problem is not a nail. It is a tire that is simply low, or losing air slowly enough that you can watch it happen over days.
If there is no visible damage and the tire takes air and holds it, an inflator alone is the right answer, and the framing that keeps it honest is this: an inflator buys distance to a shop, it does not repair anything. A slow leak is still a leak, and the source, a valve, a rim seal, a small puncture you cannot see, still needs finding.
Two details make that drive safer.
